Croeso i Dosbarth 5.

This term our Topic is ‘Our Planet’ during which the focus will be on the centenary of World War 1 and learning about the Geography of Europe. We will be applying Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills across our work.

Homeworks
As a school we believe homework plays an integral part in the academic development of children whilst also understanding how busy family life can be. therefore, it is essential that we find the correct balance between completing work outside of the school day to reinforce concepts taught in school and the pupils having time to enjoy other interests and spend quality time with their families.
With this in mind we have developed a progressive approach to home school activities that we hope you will support over the coming year.

Spellings
Spelling rules / key words will be handed out every Thursday, to be practiced / completed and then signed by a parent / guardian. Completed sheets are to be returned the following Wednesday.

Home-school Reading
Every Friday (Year 5 on Wednesday) each child will receive a home school reading book that has been chosen by the child with the support of the Class Teacher or Teaching Assistant. The pupils will then read a set number of pages with an adult at home, who will then sign their reading record and comment on their child’s reading. This book must be returned to school the following Friday (Wednesday Year 5) so their new target can be added and book changed if necessary.

Maths homework
This year Maths homework will be set every other week. we have decided to use a paper based homework activity for Maths. The homework will support the pupils understanding in class whilst reinforcing the concepts taught that week. If for any reason the task hasn’t been completed, the class teacher will ask the pupil to complete during school time to ensure they are having the opportunity to reinforce the skill like all other pupils.

Topic research
On occasions the pupils may be asked to complete some research to aid them with their topic work, but this will not take place when there is a Maths homework task. Children will be involved in the planning and direction of the Topic work.

PE
Class 5 will be having two PE lessons each week on Tuesday and a Friday. The pupils will be taking part in Athletics (Friday) and swimming (Tuesday) during this half-term.  Initially the pupils will need their PE kit of black shorts, a plain white T-shirt and trainers. We suggest that the pupils bring their kit into school on a Monday and take it home on a Friday if it requires washing, this helps avoid children forgetting their kit which causes a lot of disruption.  Swimming sessions will begin on Tuesday 25th September for a period ten weeks.
