I hope you are coping with this hot weather, it certainly is making things difficult in school but we are putting things in place to try and keep the children cool during the school day!
We had a great Sports Day on Friday and it was great to see the progression of the children from Nursery all the way to our Year 5 and 6 pupils. We have lots of positive feedback and I hope you enjoyed the afternoon, we were certainly lucky with the weather.
Our PTA once again kindly supported the event by serving refreshments and also provided all the pupils with a much-needed ice lolly to cool them down after all their hard work! The PTA also organised another very successful ‘tidy up’ day on Saturday where a number of parents and pupils came and painted the fence and some of the other wooden structures along with other bits and bobs. I am sure you have noticed these improvements which I feel make a big difference to the outdoor school environment.
As you are all now aware, Mrs Wynn will not be returning during the next academic year as she has requested a year-long sabbatical, which the governors have granted to her allow her to fully recover for her illness. I am sure like all the staff, governors and pupils that you wish Mrs Wynn a speedy recovery. This has resulted in the school advertising for a new teacher in class 4. We had a large number of applicants for the post and we are currently carrying out lessons observations with the interviews taking place later in the week. We will keep you updated once an appointment has been made.
We also have a new school caretaker. Mr Mark McGregor has decided that he wants to concentrate on his building work and therefore could not combine both jobs. I would like to thank Mark for all his hard work during his time at Ysgol Owen Jones and wish him well for the future. We have therefore appointed Mr Craig Davies as our new caretaker. Mr Davies has lots experience of caretaking and general maintenance and I am sure will do a fantastic job.
I hope you all had the chance to read our ‘Estyn Inspection’ report. We are very proud of the report and I would again like to thank the staff for all their hard work in preparing for the inspection and the pupils for their conduct and behaviour during the week. The inspectors were extremely impressed.
Like all inspections there are recommendations to hep further improve the school. One of the recommendations was around writing. In response to this, over the last few weeks we’ve been having a writing focus, with all classes focusing on story writing. It has been lovely to see and hear the pupils all working on the same skills and the progression of the work through the school. We are looking forward to reading the final pieces.
Like in previous years we will be having a ‘Self-Evaluation’ day over the coming weeks where we will be asking staff, parents, governors and pupils for their views on the school. These will feed into our Self Evaluation and help us in identifying the areas in which to develop over the next year. We will let you know when this will take place.
We have our Induction/Moving Up Day next week and I know the pupils are looking forward to meeting their new teachers if they are moving classes and mixing with different children. It’s always and exciting day and great way for pupils and teachers to get to know each other in readiness for next year.
We are currently in school trip season. Our year 2 and 3 children had a great trip to Pili Palas last week. They saw a wide range of animals and insects and they came back full of information and facts which was fantastic to see. The staff at Pili Palas were very complimentary of the pupils in terms of their listening skills and behaviour which is a great credit to them. We look forward to hearing how class 1 and 4 get on when they visit the ‘Welsh Mountain Zoo’ in a few weeks.
Finally, our cricket team performed excellently at the Mold festival winning all of their games. They will now play in the Flintshire Finals on June 27th. Good luck boys. We are taking part in the rounder’s festival this week where I am sure the children will perform well. I will let you know how they get on.
